Best walking games for iPhone: 9 apps that turn steps into a game
A step counter shows you a number. A walking game gives the number somewhere to go: a creature to feed, a route to finish, a friend to beat. This guide compares nine of them on the things that decide whether you keep playing after week one.
Disclosure: Walk with Mo is our own app. It is in the list because it belongs to this category. Prices, ratings and platform notes for every app come from the US App Store listings and the developers' own pages, checked in October 2026. We earn nothing from any app here.
The short version

- A long journey with a story: Fantasy Hike. Steps carry a halfling to Mount Fire.
- Walk a real city with a buddy and a few friends: Walk with Mo (ours).

"GPS" means the game needs your location to play, not only to count steps. "Indoors" means a treadmill or a walking pad counts the same as the street. Every app on this list reads steps from Apple Health, so the same step-counting rules apply to all of them.
Pikmin Bloom
Free. Coins from $0.99, most storage expansions $1.99. Scopely (bought from Niantic in 2025).
- The loop
- Walking grows seedlings into Pikmin and plants flowers on a real map of your route. Pikmin go on expeditions for fruit, and you fight mushrooms with friends. Over 150 Decor Pikmin to collect, and weekly team step goals.
- Good for
- People who want the Pokémon GO feeling with none of the pressure. Reviewers call it non-competitive and gentle on low-step days.
- Watch out
- Flower planting needs the screen on and GPS running, which drains the battery. The map play needs outdoor walks. The store notes say Wi-Fi-only devices and iPads are not supported.

Stompers
Free. Super Stompers at $4.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $39.99 to $59.99 a year, plus coin packs. Stompers, LLC, launched May 2024.
- The loop
- You build an avatar, add your friends or your group chat, and every day is a new step race. Items let you mess with a friend's total. A widget shows where you stand.
- Good for
- Friend groups and families who want a daily reason to text each other. The competition is the whole game.
- Watch out
- Alone it has little to offer. The weekly price is steep next to the yearly one. Android arrived in 2026, so older comparison posts that call it iPhone-only are out of date.

Steps & Beasts
Free to start. Pro from $0.79 a week, $9.99 to $29.99 a year, or a lifetime unlock at $24.99 to $49.99 depending on the offer. A solo developer, since October 2024.
- The loop
- Every morning you get an egg. Reach your step goal and it hatches into one of 250+ beasts. Your character also moves along a journey map with landmarks and chests. Streaks unlock rarer beasts.
- Good for
- One clear daily goal and a small reward for it. Widgets show the egg on your home screen.
- Watch out
- No friends or groups. Some reviewers dislike the AI-generated beast art, and the membership is not obvious before you install.

Fantasy Hike
Free with a daily distance cap. Premium at $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year, Family at $2.99 or $24.99, Hero at $9.99 or $89.99. Forge7 AB, Sweden, since 2021.
- The loop
- Your real distance moves a halfling from a cosy hole to Mount Fire, with story snippets at waypoints. Friends and fantasy characters walk the same map, so you can race them.
- Good for
- Anyone who wants a long quest instead of a daily goal. Reviews praise the "challenges me, no pressure" feeling and racing a parent or partner to the mountain.
- Watch out
- Most one-star reviews are about the paywall: the free tier counts a limited distance per day, and a 2024 switch to subscriptions upset people who had paid once. Content thins out late in the route.

Walkr
Free with ads. Ads Remover $1.99, cube packs from $1.99, SPARKFUL plan $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year. SPARKFUL, Taiwan, since 2014.
- The loop
- Steps become fuel for a spaceship. You discover planets (over 100), feed their creatures, run missions and join fleets with friends.
- Good for
- Collectors. It is the oldest gamified pedometer still updated, and some reviewers have played for years.
- Watch out
- Ads are the top complaint. It reads the phone's own motion data rather than Apple Health, so Apple Watch steps do not count, which several reviews mention.

MistyWay
Free to start. Premium at $3.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $59.99 to $79.99 a year, plus permanent companion animals at $4.99 to $9.99. A solo developer in the UK, since December 2025.
- The loop
- Each step clears fog on a hand-drawn fantasy map and uncovers villages, forests and secret places. Streaks with a freeze, 40+ achievements, works on a treadmill.
- Good for
- Walking without GPS or outdoor play. The parallax world is the draw.
- Watch out
- Young, small and solo. No friends feature, and the weekly subscription is pricey for what is on offer so far.

Wokamon
Free. Topaz currency from $0.99 to $14.99. Shikudo, since 2014, last updated March 2026.
- The loop
- Steps turn into energy that feeds, grows and evolves Wokamon creatures across themed worlds. Part pedometer, part clicker game.
- Good for
- A classic "pedometer tamagotchi" with a Watch app. Couples in the reviews play it together for years.
- Watch out
- Updates are rare now. Reviews describe broken Fitbit and Health sync and ads in the reward chests.

The Conqueror Challenges
Free app. Each challenge costs $19.99 to $29.99 and ends with a physical medal in the post. Actionary, New Zealand.
- The loop
- Pick a route, from Route 66 to a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings adventure, and your walking, running or cycling distance moves you along it. Postcards and street-view moments on the way, teams and leaderboards.
- Good for
- Finishers. If a medal on the wall is what gets you out of the door, this is the proven model. Over 80 routes, Paris included.
- Watch out
- You pay per route, and the game part is thin: it is a distance tracker with a finish line and a prize.

Walk with Mo
Free to play. Nothing in the game sells steps or box odds.
- The loop
- Mo is a small buddy who walks through one real city a month, Paris first. Your steps move him down one continuous street: Montmartre, Pont Neuf, the bookstalls, the Louvre, Le Marais, the Luxembourg garden, Champ de Mars, the Eiffel Tower. Every place gives a postcard, every 12,000 steps a gift box with a piece for Mo to wear, and a crew of two or three friends races for a weekly crown.
- Good for
- People who want a character and a small group, not a leaderboard of strangers. No GPS, no death, no guilt on a rest day: Mo stops where he is and waits.
- Watch out
- iPhone only, and one city at a time: if you want the whole world on a map, The Conqueror or Walk the Distance fit better. The Paris page shows the first city.

What to check before you pick one
- Where do the steps come from? Apps that read Apple Health see your Apple Watch, Oura or Garmin steps once those sync to Health. Apps that read the phone's motion chip only count the phone. Walkr is the main one here that does not use Health.
- What happens on a day off? Pikmin, Fantasy Hike, Mo and The Conqueror pause and wait. Streak-based games (Steps & Beasts, MistyWay) punish a missed day unless you use a freeze. Pick the one that matches how you want to feel on a sick day.
- Can you play alone? Stompers is built around a group. Steps & Beasts and MistyWay are solo. The rest work both ways.
- What is free after the trial? Several of these show the paywall only after install. Fantasy Hike caps free distance per day. Steps & Beasts and MistyWay keep the deeper content behind a membership. Stompers and Pikmin Bloom are playable free for a long time.
- How much screen time does it want? Pikmin Bloom needs the app open to plant flowers. Mo, Steps & Beasts and Fantasy Hike are fine with one open a day.
Which one for you
- You walk on a treadmill or a walking pad: Steps & Beasts, MistyWay, Fantasy Hike or Mo. Skip Pikmin Bloom.
- You want your friends in it: Stompers for a daily race, Mo for a weekly crown in a small crew, Pikmin Bloom for co-op without competition.
- You want to finish something: Fantasy Hike or The Conqueror.
- You want a pet, not a score: Wokamon if you like the old-school version, Mo if you want one character who collects outfits.

Questions
Do walking games count steps on a treadmill?
Yes, if the app reads Apple Health and your phone is in a pocket or your Watch is on your wrist. A phone on the treadmill tray counts nothing. GPS-based play, like planting flowers in Pikmin Bloom, needs real movement outdoors.
Which walking game is free?
Stompers, Pikmin Bloom, Walkr and Wokamon are playable free for a long time. Steps & Beasts, MistyWay and Fantasy Hike give you a taste and keep more behind a subscription. The Conqueror charges per route. Walk with Mo is free to play.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. The iPhone counts steps on its own when you carry it. A Watch adds the steps you take without the phone, and apps that read Apple Health pick those up.
Which walking games work with friends?
Stompers, Pikmin Bloom, Fantasy Hike, Walkr, The Conqueror and Walk with Mo. Steps & Beasts and MistyWay are solo games.
