Privacy Policy
Walk with Mo is a walking game for iPhone: your steps move Mo around a city, and you race a small crew of friends each week. This policy explains what the app and this website (walkwithmo.com) collect, why, who can see it, and how to get it deleted.
The short version. We read your step count from Apple Health and nothing else from it. We use your data only to run the game. We don't sell it, we don't show ads, we don't use it for advertising, and the app has no third-party analytics or tracking code. Your crew sees your name, your Mo and your steps; nobody else does. You can delete your account and everything in it any time in the app: Settings → Your data → Delete my data. Or write to hello@walkwithmo.com.
Who we are
Walk with Mo ("we", "us") makes the Walk with Mo app and runs walkwithmo.com. For anything about your data, contact us at hello@walkwithmo.com.
What the app collects
Your profile
When you start, the app creates an account on our server with the name you type, your Mo's name and outfit, your time zone and the app version. There is no password and no email. The app gets a random sign-in key, kept in your iPhone's Keychain; our server stores only a hash of it. Each iPhone you use gets a random device ID so its sync and notifications go to the right phone.
Steps from Apple Health
With your permission, the app reads one thing from Apple Health: your step count. It reads your daily totals and Health's 5-minute step sums, and sends them to our server, because the game is played there: Mo's progress, daily quests, gifts and the weekly race are counted from them. Daily quests are picked automatically from your own recent walking pattern (for example, whether you usually walk in the morning or the evening), only to make the quest fit your day. The app never writes anything to Apple Health and never reads any other Health data (no heart rate, workouts, sleep, weight or anything else).
Your step data from Apple Health:
- is used only to run the game for you and your crew;
- is never sold, rented or given to data brokers;
- is never used for advertising or marketing, and never shared with advertising or analytics companies;
- is not stored in iCloud;
- is shared with your crew only as step counts in the game (see "Who can see your data").
You can turn off access any time in the Health app → your profile → Apps → Walk with Mo. Mo then stops moving.
Motion
The app may ask for Motion & Fitness access so Mo can move while you walk. That data stays on your iPhone.
Your phone number (optional)
If you type your phone number, the app turns it into a hash on your iPhone and sends only the hash, so friends who have your number in their contacts can find you. We never receive the number itself. The hash still counts as personal data, and we treat it that way.
Contacts (optional)
If you allow it, the app reads names and phone numbers from your contacts to show which friends already play and to help you invite others. Each phone number is turned into a hash on your iPhone, and only the hashes are sent to our server to find matching players. We don't store your address book or those hashes, and we never text, call or email your contacts. When you invite someone, the app saves their first name in your game so it can show who you invited; that name is synced to our server with the rest of your game. Invites go out only when you send them yourself, from your own Messages or share sheet.
Your crew and the game
We store what happens in the game: your crew and who invited you, the items and postcards Mo collects, daily quests, the weekly race results, and items you or your friends use on each other. This is your game progress, and it stays with your account from month to month.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store your iPhone's push token and send notifications through Apple's Push Notification service: a friend passed you, a quest is done, the week's winner. We keep a log of the notifications we send (their text, who they are about and when), so we don't send the same one twice. You can turn them off in Settings → Notifications → Walk with Mo.
App activity
The app sends us a log of what happens in it: screens and actions in the game, with the time, your time zone and the app version, plus copies of the game state when it syncs. We use it to fix bugs, keep your progress safe across phones and tune the game. It goes only to our own server, not to an analytics company.
Invite links
When someone opens an invite link (join.walkwithmo.com), we store the invite code, the browser's user agent and a one-way hash of the network address, so that if they install the app within 72 hours they land in the crew that invited them. When a new account is created, we hash its network address the same way to find that invite.
What the app does not collect
No location, no photos, no camera or microphone, no email, no payment data, no advertising identifier. The app doesn't track you across other apps and websites.
What the website collects
- Waitlist email. If you leave your email to hear about the launch, we store it with the date, the page you came from and your country (from Cloudflare). We use it only to tell you about Walk with Mo, and you can ask us to remove it.
- Visit statistics. We count page views and button clicks, with the page that sent you and campaign tags, using PostHog, set up without cookies, without storing anything on your device, without session recording and with IP geolocation turned off.
Who can see your data
- Your crew. People in your crew see your name, your Mo and the outfit, your steps for the week, race results and the items you use on them. Someone who has your phone number in their contacts can see that you play, with your name and your Mo, and invite you.
- Service providers. Our server and database run on Cloudflare, which stores the data for us. Apple delivers notifications. PostHog counts website visits. They process data only on our behalf.
- The law. We would share data if the law requires it, for example a valid court order.
We don't sell or share personal data for advertising, and nobody else gets it.
Where it's stored and how it's protected
Data is stored on Cloudflare's servers, which may be outside your country. Everything between the app and the server goes over HTTPS. Sign-in keys and phone numbers are stored only as hashes, and only a small team has access to the database. Cloudflare and PostHog are based in the US; transfers from the EU and the UK rely on their Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account exists, because your collection and postcards are meant to last. When you tap Delete my data in the app's Settings, we delete your account from our server right away: your profile, phone number hash, steps, game progress, items, postcards, activity log, notifications and push tokens, and the app clears everything it kept on your iPhone. If you ask by email instead, we do the same within 30 days. Past weekly race results stay in your friends' crew history with your name removed, so their standings still add up, and items you used on friends stay counted in their race. We keep one record that an account was deleted, with no name or other personal details. Backups roll over within another 30 days. Waitlist emails are kept until launch messages are done or until you ask us to remove yours.
Your choices and rights
- Turn off Apple Health, contacts, motion or notifications any time in iPhone Settings or the Health app.
- Delete your account any time in the app: Settings → Your data → Delete my data. It can't be undone. Deleting the app alone doesn't delete your account.
- Ask for a copy of your data or a correction, or ask us to delete your account, by writing to hello@walkwithmo.com. Tell us the name you use in the app and your Mo's name, so we can find your account.
- If you live in the EU, the UK or a US state with a privacy law (such as California), you have the right to access, correct, delete and port your data, to object to processing, and to complain to your data protection authority. We process your data to provide the game you asked for (contract) and, for the activity log and website statistics, for our legitimate interest in running and improving it. We don't sell or share personal information as California law defines it.
Children
Walk with Mo is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you think a child has made an account, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above, and for important changes we will tell you in the app before they apply.
